Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LDN, Manager of Diabetes Directions LLC was AADE’s 2009 Diabetes Educator of the Year. Janis has spent many hours this past year traveling the country encouraging diabetes educators to get out of our clinics and programs to get the word out about the importance of taking care of yourself with diabetes and the need for diabetes education. Charlotte Hayes, MMSc, MS, RD, LD, CDE, ACSM Ex. Spec, who is both an RD, an exercise physiologist and newly elected AADE board member, presented a lecture at AADE titled Fitness and Performance Training: Diabetes and the Endurance Athlete. Charlotte notes that while most of us spend most of our time trying to get people with type 2 diabetes off the couch, there’s a growing group of people with both types of diabetes who are becoming endurance athletes – from race car drivers, to marathon runners or triathletes and Olympic swimmers. Charlotte provides some key messages about what diabetes educators need to consider when counseling elite athletes.
